Dysport®

Prescription Dysport® injectable is an FDA-approved treatment designed to temporarily reduce or eliminate moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Similar to other botulinum toxins, Dysport is injected directly into the muscle beneath the furrow, weakening it to prevent contraction.

Covington, LA

Serving Covington and the Northshore area.

Dysport, also known as Reloxin, contains a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the same toxin used in other botulinum toxin Cosmetic.

Applications for Dysport Injectable

Medically, Dysport is used to treat excessive underarm sweating, symptoms of cervical dystonia (including neck pain and abnormal head posture), and muscle spasms. Cosmetically, Dysport injections are used to address:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Skin bands on the neck

Dysport Injectable Procedure and Results

Administered with a very fine needle, Dysport is injected directly into facial muscles responsible for furrows and lines. While anesthetic is not required, some practitioners use ice packs or topical anesthetic cream to numb the area. Results typically appear within a few days and last up to 4 months; however, regularly treated areas may maintain results longer. Injections should be performed only by qualified medical professionals.

Candidates for Dysport Injectable

According to the manufacturer, ideal candidates are “adults under 65 years of age” seeking “temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).” Dysport may not be appropriate for those with:

  • Allergies to Dysport or its ingredients
  • Allergy to cow’s milk protein
  • Previous facial surgery
  • Very weak muscles in the treatment area
  • Significant facial asymmetry
  • Inflammation or infection at the injection site
  • Droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds
  • Deep facial scars
  • Thick, oily skin
  • Wrinkles that do not smooth when stretched

Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or those with neuromuscular diseases, should avoid Dysport.

Differences Between Dysport Injectable and BOTOX Cosmetic

Although both derive from the same bacterium, anecdotal evidence suggests Dysport may act faster, spread wider, and last longer than BOTOX Cosmetic.

Side Effects of Dysport Injectable

Side effects are generally mild and temporary, allowing normal activities immediately after treatment. Possible injection-site effects include:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Eyelid drooping can occur when injected in the glabellar region but usually resolves within 3 weeks. Side effects of Dysport are similar to those of BOTOX Cosmetic.
